Luna Rossa is Italian, and translates to “Red Moon”, which is the name of Prada’s sailing team (and boat), that participate in the America’s Cup competition. Anyway…

The Luna Rossa line-up (except Ocean) were created by award-winning master perfumer Daniela Andrier. And she didn’t disappoint!

Let’s break this one down…

Clean & Refreshing

Luna Rossa opens with a HUGE blast of clean-soapy lavender, mixed with a refreshing splash of bitter orange citrus.

Now, as it settles… the citrus fades and the lavender tones down. And then some spearmint joined with a herbal tinge creep in and morph with the lavender.

The result:

Cool Minty Freshness!

A sophisticated, slightly-powdery, soapy scent with some cool minty freshness.

It smells clean, bright, and uplifting. Resulting in a LOT of those… “you smell nice!” type compliments. 🙂

And the beautiful part:

Super Versatile

Luna Rossa is super versatile. As it suits all ages, and works great all year round (shines in spring/summer) as a daily workhorse.

In fact, it’s mild mannerisms make it perfect for the office/work. But, it works equally well for casual use, dressed up, special occasions, the gym, you name it.

Now, to be clear:

If you’re looking for a projection monster, this is NOT it. Luna Rossa is an EDT and projects just under arm’s length for the first few hours.

It then sits politely close to the skin, lasting about 4–8 plus hours.

Prada Amber Pour Homme has a TON of listed fragrance notes, which have been masterfully blended to create a luxuriously clean, soapy scent — with a sweet, spicy kick.

Luxury Soapiness

A light purple colored luxury bar of soap — mixed with a hint of powdery, spicy sweetness.

In a nutshell, that’s Prada Amber Pour Homme. And it smells GREAT. 🙂

And as this dries down on your skin, some saffron, myrrh, and vanilla creep in, which give it a nice, warm, sweet-leathery undertone.

Now, I should point something out:

Elegant

This is not a super masculine type of cologne. Prada Amber Pour Homme is an elegant scent, more suited for a mature 25-up sharply dressed metrosexual man.

The good news…

Any Occasion

This is super versatile and can be worn all year (spray lightly in summer, though) for just about ANY occasion. (GREAT for business/office/interviews.)

After all, it’s never a bad time to smell clean and fresh, right? 🙂

Prada Amber Pour Homme is an EDT and projects about an arm’s length for the first few hours. It then becomes more subtle and sits close to the skin. Lasts, ballpark, 5–8 plus hours.

Now, a quick word of warning:

Don’t go crazy with the sprayer, as this is a “less is more” type of scent.

1–3 sprays MAX… and you’re set.

A Clean, Spicy-Sweet, Soapy Scent

Now, I should point something out:

The name “sport” is actually quite misleading.

Why?

Well… most “sport” versions of a fragrance are usually a lighter, citrusy aquatic version of the original scent.

Not this one.

This is a spicy, sweeter (and better smelling 🙂) version of the original Prada Luna Rossa.

Let’s take a closer look…

Fresh, Clean & Spicy-Sweet

Luna Rossa Sport opens fresh, clean, and spicy sweet… with a blast of lavender mixed with a slightly powdery vanilla/tonka bean combo.

By the way, when you first spray it, you might pick up on some slight similarities to another fragrance called Le Male, by Jean Paul Gaultier (except Luna Rossa Sport is more refined, smoother, and not as loud).

So…

If you like(d) that fragrance… I think you’re going to LOVE Luna Rossa Sport. That said, as it dries down it takes its own direction…

Pinch of Fresh Ginger

Because as it dries down, it becomes slightly more sweet (but not overly sweet), and is joined with a pinch of fresh, spicy ginger and juniper berries.

The result?

A beautiful, slightly powdery, clean, spicy-sweet, soapy scent.

It’s smooth, slightly warm and alluringly sweet. HUGE compliment getter.

The beautiful part:

Any Occasion… Anywhere… Anytime…

This is super-versatile. All ages (20-up), any occasion, anytime, anywhere (work/office, casual, dates, nights out, clubbing, you name it…).

That said, ironically, I wouldn’t recommend wearing it for any sports, or when it’s super-hot outside, as it will become overly sweet.

Now, to be clear:

Subtle

This is a fragrance that doesn’t scream out for attention… So if you’re looking for a room-filler, you will be disappointed.

Luna Rossa Sport is an EDT and projects about an arm’s length for the first 1–2 hours.

It then sits closer to the skin (making it a GREAT choice for work/office), and lasts around 5–8 plus hours.

Bottom line:

If you’re looking for a nice, safe, crowd-pleasing fragrance… to wear in ANY season, for almost ANY situation…

Try this.

Luxurious Soapy-Clean Freshness!

This is a simple (but luxurious), clean, fresh smelling scent.

By the way, this also made it onto our overall top 10 best men’s colognes list — for good reason!

Let’s take a sniff, shall we? 🙂

Bright, Fresh & Clean

Prada L’Homme opens up with a blast of neroli mixed with some iris and other floral notes — these give you a bright, fresh, clean-soapy feeling.

Nice.

Now, as it dries down, it becomes slightly powdery, and morphs with a kiss of warm amber sweetness… with whispers of black pepper. It also develops a nice woody undertone.

It smells soft, clean, smooth, and luxurious. And with its slightly sweet undertone, it garners some nice compliments.

Now, to be clear:

Modern & Sophisticated

This is not a super-masculine cologne. This is a modern, sophisticated scent, which is more suited for the sharply-dressed metrosexual 20-up crowd.

The good news?

Prada L’Homme can be worn all year (but is more suited for spring/summer)… for just about ANY situation when you want to smell fresh and clean.

(Which should be always, right? 🙂)

Perfect for the Office

That said, where this scent truly shines, is for formal office wear. Because…

#3 Prada Luna Rossa Black

Dark, Warm, Sweet & Seductive

Straight off the bat…

Luna Rossa Black opens with a blast of warm, sweet, semi-powdery tonka bean and amber… mixed with a pinch of freshness (bergamot citrus).

As it settles, the citrus fades, and the smooth, warm powdery sweetness is joined with a hint of a green herbal note and a nice, clean musky undertone.

Warm & Inviting

It smells dark, smooth, sweet (but not overly sweet), warm, and incredibly inviting.

Ain’t complaining. 🙂

Luna Rossa Black is more suited for the mature 25-up, and best worn in cooler weather: fall/winter (and/or cool spring nights).

This is more of a dressy, nighttime scent (but smells GREAT anytime): date nights, special occasions, nights out, clubbing, casual, work/office.

Gorgeous Scent Trail

Luna Rossa Black is an EDP and doesn’t scream out for attention. It projects around an arm’s length for the first few hours (leaving a gorgeous scent trail).

It then sits closer to the skin, creating a nice scent cloud around you, which draws people in (making it a great date-night scent)… and keeps rolling for 6–8 plus hours.

#2 Prada Luna Rossa Ocean (EDT version)

New Release!

In a nutshell:

Luna Rossa Ocean is a modern, masculine scent for guys who want that clean, fresh-out-the-shower confident feeling — but don’t want to be loud.

Now, this is the latest release in the brands LR line. And interestingly, is a collaboration between 2 master perfumers (Carlos Benaim & Anne Flipo). And, by the way…

I gotta say, the short commercial featuring superstar actor Jake Gyllenhaal is pretty cool. If you haven’t seen it…

Yup, that is pretty cool… But I want to know — what does it smell like?

I’m glad you asked, my friend! Let me tell you:

Luna Rossa Ocean starts off bright and fresh, with a burst of bergamot citrus mixed with a pop of spicy pink pepper, which helps liven it up. I also pick up on a faint cooling minty undertone (though, it’s not listed as an official note).

And when the citrus burns off, lavender and iris come into play and work in tandem to create, what I would describe as:

A nice light powdery-sweetness… sitting on top of a layer of luxurious-smelling smooth, clean soapiness.

Clean & Confident

Then finally, as it plays out, some dry woodiness pokes through the soapy sweetness — with a dose of clean musk. The result:

A pleasing, inoffensive, clean, fresh scent. Not gonna complain about that, right? And when you get some nice compliments, I doubt you’ll complain, too. 🙂

And it’s worth mentioning, despite its name, I don’t get any “oceanic” type feel. And to be crystal clear:

Safe & Inoffensive

LR Ocean is a safe, subtle scent that doesn’t scream out for attention. So if you’re after something loud, you’re going to be disappointed. (Definitely not the best pick if you’re looking for a going-out or club type scent.)

Because for up to the first 2 hours, it projects politely off the skin (within an arm’s reach).

It then hovers, unobtrusively, just above the skin, giving off inviting, gentle wafts, before eventually fading into a pleasing skin scent.

And for this reason, this makes LR Ocean a PERFECT office/work scent for when you want to “play it safe” and not have to worry about offending your coworkers with your scent.

Office Friendly

In fact, this makes it a pleasure to wear for all ages, anytime, for just about any occasion — all year (just adjust your sprays accordingly).

Because, after all, it’s never a bad time, or age, to smell super-clean, right?

And I’ll be straight with you…

In our tests, lasting power was a bit spotty, as results were all over the place.

This is an EDT, and depending on the temperature it was worn and the users’ skin chemistry, we got a mixed bag of between 4–8 hours. But…

Fortunately, there’s an easy solution to this:

If it doesn’t last long on your skin, just give your clothes a few spritzes as well, to boost its performance for a few extra hours.

Sorted. 🙂

Oh, and did I mention the bottle looks awesome?

In my opinion, the LR Ocean bottle is the coolest looking of the bunch. It has a gorgeous deep blue colored gradient and pops with the contrasting red stripe. Anyway…

Bottom line:

If you’re looking for something modern, safe, and inoffensive, that will give you that fresh-out-the-shower clean confidence, then this could be for you.

Heads up: The brand recently released Luna Rossa Ocean Eau de Parfum (a re-worked, stronger concentration of this.)

And after extensively testing the new EDP version, we (and our testers) believe the original EDT version is the better smelling. Hence — it remains in this list.

So please choose wisely.

#1 Prada Luna Rossa Carbon

A Fresh Spicy-Sweet Scent

I’ll be straight with you…

When you first spray Luna Rossa Carbon, it smells quite similar to the fragrance Dior Sauvage EDT (except Luna Rossa Carbon is smoother, sweeter, and not as loud).

So…

If you already own Dior Sauvage, I think this may be a redundant scent for you (unless you’re a collector, of course.)

That said, when Luna Rossa Carbon dries down on your skin, it takes its own direction…

It’s less spicy, slightly fresher, smoother, sweeter… and more refined — oh, and it’s more affordable. 🙂

Let’s take a closer look…

Super Refreshing

Luna Rossa Carbon opens up super refreshing — with a blast of bergamot citrus, mixed with a pinch of spicy-pepper and a dose of ambroxan (an aroma molecule which gives it a nice, semi-sweet metallic vibe).

Bam!

Now, as it settles, the citrus fades and the spiciness is smoothed out with some lavender sweetness. This is joined with a hint of a slightly earthy vibe which sits in the background.

The end result:

You’re left with a nice, clean, spicy-fresh, semi-sweet scent. And it smells GREAT.

And the good news…

All Seasons. All Occasions.

This is hyper-versatile: All ages (20-up), all seasons, and all occasions (days/nights). Casual, dates, nights out, special occasions, work/office, interviews, clubbing — you name it.

Huge, HUGE compliment getter (‘nough said 🙂).

This was previously on the #4 spot on this list, but we moved it here because, apparently, it’s being discontinued in the US market (why, oh why?). But…

The good news, it’s still available in a lot of places — so get it while the gettin’s good. Anyway…

Here’s what you need to know:

Prada L’Homme Intense is a darker, more masculine version of our updated #4 pick above: Prada L’Homme (which is more suited for daytime/warmer weather use).

On the other hand, this Intense version is more suited for cold weather/nighttime use, so much so that it’s currently also a top pick on our best winter colognes list.

Let’s break it down…

Iris

Prada L’Homme Intense opens with a blast of clean, fresh, soapy iris… mixed with a leathery vibe and a pinch of tonka bean sweetness.

And as it dries down on your skin, it gets darker, richer, and smoother — as the patchouli and woods creep in.

The end result:

A luxurious, dark, leathery, and slightly sweet-powdery, clean soapy scent.

Very, very nice. 🙂

Dressed Up

Prada L’Homme Intense is more suited for the mature 25-up metrosexual crowd, for dressed up/formal occasions in the cooler weather: fall/winter (and cool spring nights).

Special occasions, date nights, office, nights out, etc.

Now, a quick word of warning:

Don’t go crazy with the trigger, and avoid wearing in the high summer heat, as it will get cloying (better you use Prada L’Homme for spring/summer).
